Electric Vehicle Charging Installation for Queensland Homes

With electric vehicle charging installation at home, you plug in when you park and wake up to a car that's ready to go. A dedicated wall charger is several times faster than a standard power point, and it's built to carry that load safely night after night.

Hinterland & Coast Electrical installs EV chargers for homes across the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Toowoomba and the Sunshine Coast. Our licensed electricians check your supply and switchboard first. Then we recommend a charger that suits your car and how far you drive.

Why Queensland Homeowners Install a Home EV Charger

Plenty of new EV owners start with the portable cable that came with the car. It works, but it's slow. These are the reasons people move to a home electric vehicle charger.

Several times faster

A 7.4kW wall charger adds roughly 40 to 50 km of range an hour on most cars. A standard power point manages about 10 to 15 km.

Full by morning

Plug in after dinner. A typical day's driving is topped up long before you leave for work.

Charge on your own solar

Solar-aware chargers can put spare daytime solar into the car instead of exporting it to the grid for a few cents.

Built for the load

Your charger gets its own circuit and the right protection, installed to the Australian wiring rules. A car pulls heavy current for hours, and a standard outlet isn't designed for that every night.

Schedule it from your phone

Most smart chargers have an app. Set charging to start when your electricity is cheapest, then forget about it.

Ready for your next car

Most EVs sold in Australia use the Type 2 plug for home charging, so a Type 2 charger should suit the car after this one too.

A Home EV Charger Planned Around Your Car and Your Switchboard

The charger itself is the easy part. What takes judgement is your supply. We check whether your home is on single-phase or three-phase power, and how much spare capacity your switchboard has once the air con, oven and hot water are all running.

Distance matters too. A charger in a garage right next to the switchboard is a simpler job than one in a carport on the other side of the house, and the cable run affects the cost. We look at all of this before recommending anything, so there are no surprises on installation day.

Our licensed electricians take care of electric car charger installation for a wide range of makes and models. Some customers drive a short commute and only need a basic charger. Others run two EVs, or want the car to soak up their spare solar. The right setup is different for each.

You get a written recommendation for the charger and where it goes. Any switchboard work needed is listed on it.

  4. 04. Install and test

Our licensed electricians install the charger on its own circuit, then test it before we hand it over.

  5. 05. Set up the app

We connect the charger to your Wi-Fi and set up a charging schedule or solar mode if you want one.

Tell us what you drive and how far you go. We'll recommend a charger that fits, not the most expensive one on the shelf.

Choosing the Right Home EV Charger

Two things set how fast you can charge at home: your power supply, and the onboard charger built into your car. The slower of the two wins.

Single-phase (up to 7.4kW)

Most Queensland homes are single-phase. A 7.4kW charger on a 32A circuit is the usual choice and covers daily driving for most households.

Three-phase (11 to 22kW)

Faster, but only if your car can accept it. Many EVs top out at 11kW on AC charging, so a 22kW charger won't always charge any quicker.

Tethered or socket

A tethered charger has the cable fixed on, so you just plug in. A socket version uses your own cable, which suits households with cars that use different plugs.

Solar-aware charging

If you have solar, a charger with a solar mode can charge the car from your spare daytime power. It works best when the car is home during the day.

Range figures are estimates for a typical EV using 15 to 18 kWh per 100 km. Your car's onboard charger can cap the speed: many accept up to 7.4kW or 11kW, and only a few accept 22kW. We'll tell you what to expect for your car.

Charge Your EV on Stored Solar

Most cars get plugged in at night, after the panels have stopped. A home battery stores your daytime solar so you can charge on it after dark instead of buying grid power. We install home battery systems across the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Toowoomba and the Sunshine Coast.

EV Charging Questions Queenslanders Ask

Can I charge my EV from a normal power point?

Yes. Most EVs come with a portable cable that plugs into a standard power point. It's slow, though, adding roughly 10 to 15 km of range an hour. That can be enough for a short daily commute.

If you drive further, or the car sits empty some mornings, a wall charger makes life easier. It also puts the load on its own circuit instead of a general power point that wasn't designed to run at full current for hours every night.

How fast will a home EV charger charge my car?

A 7.4kW single-phase charger adds roughly 40 to 50 km of range an hour on most cars. On three-phase power, an 11kW charger adds about 60 to 75 km an hour.

Your car has the final say. Its onboard charger limits how much AC power it accepts, and many EVs top out at 7.4kW or 11kW. We'll check your car's limit before recommending a charger, so you don't pay for speed it can't use.

Do I need three-phase power for an EV charger?

No. Most Queensland homes are single-phase, and a 7.4kW charger on single-phase covers everyday driving for most households. Three-phase power allows 11kW or 22kW charging, but only helps if your car can accept that much. If your home doesn't have three-phase, upgrading the connection from the street can be a significant cost, so it's rarely worth doing for charging alone.

Have Queensland's EV charger rules changed?

Yes. From 1 October 2026, Energex and Ergon Energy Network removed the rule that capped single-phase home chargers at 20A (about 4.6kW) unless a network management device was fitted.

A licensed electrician can now install a single-phase charger to run at the full 32A, or about 7.4kW, without that device. Your switchboard still needs the capacity for it, and we check that before installing.

Will I need a switchboard upgrade?

Sometimes. An EV charger is one of the biggest loads in a home. Older switchboards with ceramic fuses, or boards with no room for a new circuit, may need an upgrade first.

We also work out your home's maximum demand, which is how much power everything could draw at once. If ducted air con, a pool heater and the oven could all be running while the car charges, we may set up load management so the charger slows down instead of tripping your main supply.

Can I charge my EV with solar?

Yes. A charger with a solar mode can put your spare daytime solar into the car instead of exporting it. It works best if the car is parked at home during the day.

If you mostly charge at night, a home battery can store your solar for the evening. We install both, so we can plan them together.

Should I get a tethered or socket charger?

A tethered charger has the cable permanently attached. You park, plug in and go, and there's nothing to carry around.

A socket charger uses your own cable. It looks tidier on the wall and suits homes where two cars use different plugs. For most single-EV homes, tethered is the more convenient choice. Our home EV charger guide has more on choosing between charger types.

Will an EV charger work with my car?

Almost certainly. Most EVs sold in Australia use the Type 2 plug for AC charging, and that's what nearly all home chargers use. A few older models, like early Nissan Leafs, use Type 1. Tell us what you drive and we'll make sure the charger matches.

Where should the charger be installed?

Usually on a garage or carport wall, close to where the car's charging port sits when parked. Cable length matters, and so does protection from the weather if it's outside.

If you want to use the charger's app, it also needs a decent Wi-Fi signal. We'll suggest the best spot when we see your property.

How much does electric vehicle charging cost at home?

It depends on your electricity rate and how far you drive. As a rough example, a car using 17 kWh per 100 km needs about 7 kWh for a 40 km day. At 30 cents per kWh, that's around $2.10.

Charge from your own solar, or on a cheaper overnight rate, and it costs less. Some retailers offer plans built for EV owners, so it's worth checking.

How long does an EV charger installation take?

A straightforward install near the switchboard is often done in a few hours. Long cable runs, a switchboard upgrade or three-phase work take longer. We'll give you a realistic time once we've seen the job.

Do you install EV chargers for businesses?

Yes. As well as homes, we handle EV charging station installation for businesses. Commercial sites usually need more planning around power supply and how many cars will charge at once, so we start with a site assessment.
